The Maple Leafs are scuffling and Ilya Samsonov is on waivers after becoming unplayable.
Dennis Hildeby will be a short-term replacement for Samsonov, and eventually, Joseph Woll will return from a high ankle sprain. Is the combination of Woll and Martin Jones good enough, if Samsonov can’t be redeemed in the minors? (Could they even trust him in that case?)
It’s worth a meeting or three for Brendan Shanahan, Brad Treliving and the Leafs’ front office. Who could they pursue to bolster the crease — as a potential No. 1, 2 or even 3? Let’s pick through the potential possibilities, a few of whom make some sense.
Leave it as is.
Other teams will know they have the leafs over the barrel, but Jones is fine too hold the crease until Woll gets back.
Bring up AHL goalies and test them out in practice to see how they match up, if the feeling is they can’t be trusted to take over a game, put feelers out, but as it stands they’re going to be paying out the nose for a temporary asset.
Is there anyone worth it on the market right now?
I’m OK with Woll/Jones.
