Prosecutors accused the officers of using deadly force on Manuel Ellis during his arrest in Washington state.

Mr Ellis, 33, was beaten and restrained face down on the pavement in Tacoma. Video footage shows him pleading for help, saying he could not breathe.

Defence attorneys argued he died from drugs and an existing heart condition.

His death came just months before George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis, sparking protests and a new movement to highlight racial injustice.

Two of the officers in the Ellis case, Matthew Collins, 40, and Christopher Burbank, 38, were acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter.

The third, Timothy Rankine, 34, was acquitted of manslaughter. They had all pleaded not guilty.

Even if that is true about why he died, in a just country, police beating someone who is pleading for help and saying they can’t breathe should, at the very least, result in a conviction for assault and battery.

I feel like the argument should be made, if he wasn’t on drugs and had a heart condition and died ,would the result have been different? It seems to beat a man you suspect might be on drugs, and know nothing of his other possible health conditions, and then leave them face down despite cries of not being able to breath should be manslaughter without a doubt. You killed him without meaning to, they just wanted to fuck him up and treat him like human garbage, but that abuse led to his death. It seems open and shut.

There’s a great podcast that’s been following the case.

The results are an absolute sham. He would not have died if they didn’t beat the shit out of him or even stop him, with no reason, to begin with.
