It’s been a while since I tinkered with my PC and now I’m afraid I have no choice but to upgrade to a beefier AM4 proc for productivity.

For context, I will be using it to post-process RAW images from my photography hobby. I am currently using an R5 3600 but its not powerful enough for the job. The highest i can go from what i’ve read so far is an R9 5950x. My question now is: Can my current motherboard handle it? Would it be a simple swap or do i need to upgrade the motherboard bios? I have not done a bios upgrade before and im afraid i will screw up.

According to the motherboard’s website you should be good to upgrade just the cpu, and says it’s supported from BIOS version 2409 and above. That BIOS version seems to have come out on 2020/12/04 and according to the cpu-z screenshot your’s seems to be from 2019/11/13 so I think you’ll need to update it.

Other than that maybe look into what memory speeds you want to hit with the new cpu, i think 3600 MHz is the sweet spot for amd 5000’ but should work just as fine with 3200 (which might be what you already have since it’s standard for the R5 3600 cpus as well).
