There’s a chance of death in all those situations, but I’d rather take those chances any day than taking a similar chance while committing evil. Arguably those chances of death are lower than letting it get to the point where you’re actually in battle.
I’m sure they would if they had the choice.
They actually do have a choice, three of them in fact:
Kill their own chain of command, from the company up to the field-level batallion commander.
Commit suicide after killing their own Russian fellow soldiers by shooting them in the back.
Surrender to Ukraine forces.
There were plenty of choices.
