    Harper was able to keep the party centred, more or less. Mind you, he did it by breaking the proverbial kneecaps of anyone who stepped out of line. He was very aware that backbenchers howling about abortion or gay rights would doom the party.

    O’Toole wasn’t as iron-fisted as Harper, which is why he (and any other moderate) haven’t been able to keep control.

    Poillevre knows this, which is why his tactic to is just ride the tiger for as long as he can. His problem will be, at some point, the base will demand something he’s not willing or able to do, and he’ll be replaced by the next fascist boot-licker who will.
