I guess this isn’t really even “news” to Linux gamers now, but once in a while it’s nice to make an article about what constant progress has happened in a certain sphere. Certainly many people staying on Windows out of inertia blinked and missed it.
My fervent hope is that, someday in the future, people can build a gaming PC and just forego Windows to save $100.
One of the ones I remember the most is in the original COD4: Modern Warfare. A blog highlighted so savagely the fact that your squad is sent down to rescue a female chopper pilot who’s been downed and wounded. Then, a nuke goes off, killing everyone, suggesting they could have gotten out of the blast radius if they didn’t save her - meaning a woman in distress was the death of the whole squad. The blog lambasted Infinity Ward for giving such a horrible treatment to the game’s only major female character.
Of course, that’s a relatively disingenuous interpretation. That same mission has you rescuing whole squads of pinned soldiers moments before (all men). The chopper pilot gets her great moments of heroism in the process. And it’s very likely the writers intended for the squad to be killed by a nuke no matter what happens.
And there have probably been COD games out there with NO notable women in them. So somehow, the move to include one in this particular game struck them as worse than if they’d done nothing at all.
The comic may be a joke, but I feel like this is an issue in diversity.
Take an author who has three characters. They want better representation, so one white character becomes black.
But, it turns out that character gives a third-act betrayal. Now it’s playing up the theme that black people are deceptive and untrustworthy.
Or, they try making the second character a woman. In a key conflict, that character pulls a very stupid move that lets the bad guys get away and results in an exciting chase scene. Now it evokes the idea that women are stupid and ill-suited to detective/enforcement work.
I really want a world where we can safely set up characters for moments of failure, evil, etc, without large crowds either feeling offended, feigning offense, or worse, taking it as validation of their bigotry.
I’m not really qualified to answer, we might need a deep-sublayer geologist.
The one I’m on has a very functional “search and install” app, but I still find myself habitually opening up terminal for installation out of “fastness”. Maybe it’s a poor impulse I should correct.
Probably the biggest thing driving terminal use is opening and configuring system files. You can do that with the file explorer and an elevated text editor, but a lot of guides aiming for conciseness will give you some command to wget a long file online, then insert content into a text file by path in one line.
I kinda get there’s some common meme about Nvidia being Linux’s kryptonite, but everything’s been okay for me on CachyOS. This after some issues earlier in the year on Mint and even Bazzite.

What the hell causes people to believe there’s a large political faction that wants people in media to be unattractive? At worst, some people just get taken out of a fantasy world if the women are wearing straight bikinis for no reason, but there’s many ways to make them look sexy without attire being totally impractical.
There used to be something called the White Panthers. Thankfully, not a KKK branch; it was basically just the white faction of the Black Panthers.
We might need them even more: part of the reason most black communities have stayed silent is because even peacefully protesting (while black) is enough for racist America to see it as a riot and demand the National Guard.
I’m a little half and half on it. A lot of people like myself are fed up with the obsessive way AI is pushed into everything, but I can see it having uses.
For instance, sifting through 20,000 “This user didn’t accept my argument evidence” reports to find some that have merit; that can be worthwhile, even if all it does is alert a human to take a look and make a full judgment. Besides, the bar for quality moderators on sites like Reddit is low.
I think this still matters in a long term.
Good games tend to be made by big teams. That’s why when you hear about some auteur recruiting his own random team for a game, it ends up being a failed venture usually.
AI is often an effort to replace large teams with small ones, churning someone’s half-baked thoughts into code and art. The result is rarely human and inventive; and in a lot of ways, it tends to show in the end product.

There’s an unfortunate dilemma there. When someone makes a Darth Vader or Joker character, many people like them, but some like them without a trace of irony, and genuinely feel that the Empire should kill those horrible rebels and that chaos should reign in Gotham. And that gestures America.
I mean, some looter shooters are successful. Division retains some popularity, Borderlands 2 was well loved.
I can believe that scattered around, there were cool ideas in Anthem’s development if they could just retain focus/planning. I think in that time, we were just seeing way too much meddling in development based on trends.
Arc Raiders’ Rattler was built for these folks. Automatic rifle, loads bullets two at a time into its bolted-on magazine.
I think when the policy is well-made, it would fit with security camera workings. When you go shopping at the mall, pay for your stuff and leave, you’re recorded, but the running footage is erased every 48 hours or so. It’s only when the mall has a major shoplifting incident, or a mass shooting, would someone tag the period of the crime and save it all for review. Similarly, police would only need body camera review if there’s a report they discharged their weapon, made an arrest, etc.
There are so many family caretakers that have a similar unfortunate dichotomy in their minds. Like everyone else is mourning at the funeral, but they saw that person “die” a decade ago, leaving behind a husk of hate, forgetfulness, or missing energy.
It starts to feel a bit like going to university. Maybe 10% of the ones you try out will be total misses, maybe even discourage you on the search. But chances are, 90% of the options are perfectly suitable for your uses, and everyone will end up feeling a bit of faithful loyalty to their destination of choice.
I wonder if there’s a name for the behavior where no “alt word” is created.
“Bread” is “pan” in Spanish. We had cultural exchange, both had bread, and related the word. But America didn’t have tacos. So, we use their word.
If you imagine an industrialized nation meeting with a basic hunting tribe, the latter is going to be missing a LOT of words, and hence no matter the origins of their linguistic structure they’ll call a satellite a satellite.
Something I just realized is that this fits exactly with the “Only happens in production” issues many coders run into.
Anyone in the studio would obviously install all the DLC, since they need to test its contents. They’d also run habitual tests without the DLC to verify it’s not necessary, and that it passes basic checks. But, they wouldn’t do that often. Same with how, say, many webapps run internally without the 80 MB of tracking scripts.
