Original Title: This summer I want to sail out to a barrier island and use my two weeks PTO to quit nicotine once and for all. I have some questions for provisioning my 1984 Catalina 25. Ideally, I won’t come back for supplies, but if that is not possible, I will come back
As the title says, I want to sail out to a barrier island for a couple of weeks to quit nicotine. I live in Coastal Georgia, so it will be hot, but I’m cool with that. I have a 1984 Catalina 25. I have two lead batteries in parallel that provide approximately 117 amp hours of power.
I bought this boat to learn to work on boats and get my sea legs back. I’m 37, but I used to sail 420s in high school and an 18-foot keelboat. I don’t currently have solar; my batteries are charged when connected to shore power. I bought the boat how-to course on electronics, so I will work through that this December.
As far as solar, I saw a YouTube video where this guy had this massive battery bank, and he setup an inverter so that he could use the AC outlets. When connected to shore power, the inverter charges the batteries automatically. And the solar would keep them topped off. This probably sounds overkill to do on my boat, but I was considering doing something like that to prepare for a bigger boat.
As far as power, I have a Garmin chartplotter and some lights. I would probably need to power starlink for work at least 3 - 6 hours a day just to ensure I didn’t need to be reached. Starlink Mini is DC power. I have two broken DC outlets, so I will fix those.
I would like to set up a fridge and maybe convert the icebox to a fridge/freezer. I saw some conversion kits. Would it be better to plug in a DC cooler or mini fridge? Or how about dry ice? Could that last a week and could make two weeks last with two provisioning trips?
I have a propane stove. Initially, I would bring some meat and avocados, but I could make grits or pancakes as well. I’m also planning on fishing some.
I most likely will need to power Starlink so that calls go through to my phone. But everything else like the fridge can be scrapped if I can just eat good for two weeks and head home
