@games What demos did you play today? | DAY 4
Greetings fiery flames of the Fediverse, it’s the 4th day of the #SteamNextFest , we are reaching the sunset of this event, so it is important more than ever to experience and share your curiosities before they’re gone … FOREVER!
(and by forever meaning until the successive fest)
Artisan TD, a classic tower defense game. I quit after the second map. It’s not that it’s bad, it just didn’t grab my attention, doesn’t seem to have anything unique going for it besides maybe the pretty visuals. There are dozens of games exactly like this one. As a fan of the genre, I might check it out after release if it’s on a large sale.
Level Zero: Extraction, a PvP extraction shooter with the option of playing as the horror creature team that’s out to kill everyone. Basically unplayable, not sure what the server situation is but playing from europe I had consistent 0.5sec-1sec delay on all actions. No comment since I couldn’t really experience it.
Let’s Minesweeper, a massively multiplayer game of Minesweeper. Not sure what I expected of this one, it’s exactly what it says it is, you load into a huge map of minesweeper and clear it out for score and xp which translates into bragging rights and cosmetics (?). Unique experience and could be fun if you are the type of person who enjoys zoning out at minesweeper for an hour.
@games And for today’s theme: 2d platforming
With Ghost Knight: A Dark Tale
This charmingly Halloweeny game is a project I’ve been waiting for 4 years, since its reveal in 2020, and while we may still be far from its release, even in this small slice I could see the potential of a sweat little gem, this is a passion pet project through and through, and I can’t wait for its maturing
@games Pipsqueak!
There is a niche set of developers who produce games under certain limitations, mechanical or thematical however may it be, I suspect that this project was born of a similar cloth, specifically from those who create games as if they were to run on a GBA, kind of like Goodboy Galaxy, it’s an interesting way to create games, it has that feeling to it, and luckily, it also has the charm and a feel of polish for a game from such a console
@games Sacre Bleu
Oh boy, it’s absurd to pretend completeness during a demo showcase, but for this one … I feel like it was released a bit too early for its sake: missing sounds, finicky controls, and overall not a good impression, one positive note is that it manages to blend 2d sprites with 3d environments better than others, but I do believe that the dev should have waited the next event and spent a bit more time cooking, because as now, it feels too much half-baked, even for a demo
@games Voidwright
This MetroidVania (or as I like to call them explorative platformers) belongs to the birthing category of Hollow Knight-likes, the graphic style, the subtle narrated story, and even the combat, resemble that of HK, the whole judgment hinges of whether the devs are going to be able to match its level of quality, if they will, that’s going to be great! If they don’t, it’s going to be forgotten faster than the failed vessels thrown into the abyss
Pipsqueak looks interesting! I don’t know how I missed it when browsing. If you like that GBA style, also check out the demo for Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo.

2 quite different puzzler games:
This one caught my eye because of the art (same artist as Braid) but the everything about this game is charming
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2596420/Arranger_A_RolePuzzling_Adventure/ Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure follows the story of Jemma, a small-town misfit on a journey of self-discovery. Venturing out beyond her stiflingly cozy confines, she finds an inspiring world - but also one ruled by fear, and a strange, immovable ‘static’ force. Can she disrupt a culture of stagnation, and find a place to fit into it?This one I played because it’s by Game Maker’s Toolkit from YouTube so was keen to see what he’d built. Also enjoyed this one and it has a cute and polished presentation style.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2685900/Mind_Over_Magnet/ Mind Over Magnet: Escape a dangerous factory using the power of magnetism. You must team up with three different magnet friends and use their unique abilities to solve more than 60 tricky single-screen puzzles.I blasted through eight demos yesterday (my Mastodon log). There were some very promising ones.
Akimbot is a third-person shooter/platformer in the vein of Ratchet and Clank. I liked the environment art and the combat shows promise, but since the demo is for the start of the game, the combat is pretty simple. The playable duo is a grumpy robot and a Claptrap expy who don’t get along. Their interactions annoy me, so their relationship better improve a lot as the game goes on. This is apparently the debut game for much of the staff, which is very impressive. Wishlisted.
Slash Quest is a lighthearted Zelda-style adventure, but you control the sword and drag the wielder around. It’s a funny use of tank controls. I don’t know how long this gimmick can last, though.
Ash & Adam’s GOBSMACKED is a fast-paced roguish FPS about going goblin mode. The game is a linear chain of arenas against garbage bin robots that only last 1-2 minutes. The combat is intense and chaotic and encourages stylish gameplay without getting exhausting. Compared to Gunfire Reborn, it seems to be less of a “numbers game” with complex build strategy and will take way less time for a run. I can see myself enjoying both at the same time. Wishlisted.
Sparedevil is a bowling-themed FPS, vaguely with the arena gameplay of Devil Daggers. The graphics are goofy and have that 90s crusty 3D look. You get bonus points for trick shots and a powerup when you hit a strike. It’s an amusing and unique theme, but I’m not sure how much more game there can be beyond this demo. A run seems to be extremely short: less than 30 seconds.
NBB.EXE is a 3D platformer with Bomberman-style gameplay. It has a futuristic “sports on TV” theme, which is a niche aesthetic that I like a lot. It has a very stylish presentation and graphic design style that’s kind of metalheart. The singleplayer content I tried was just platforming with a bit of bombing out obstacles; multiplayer wasn’t available in the demo. Unfortunately, the sometimes unresponsive controls, flashy graphics, and high top-down camera angle are awful for platforming. I want to like this game, so I’ll at least keep an eye on it.
Pinball Spire is pinball metroidvania. In practice, it’s a long, interconnected series of tables with some exploration in between. It’s a cool combination of two types of game, but it’s not for me. I spend a lot of time fumbling around with the ball to try to get it to the right opening.
RUBATO is a 2D collectathon platformer. It has a lot of personality and a great sense of humour, with a silly plot, funny cutscenes, and bizarre breaks in the art style. The music is catchy and the pixel art is polished, other than the intentional breaks. This is a true pixel art game, with everything snapped to a pixel grid. Pixel art has definitely been overrepresented in my Next Fest lineup, and so far, this and Pipistrello stand out in the quality of the pixel art. Wishlisted.
Slider is a top-down puzzle game that takes place on a sliding tile puzzle. You slide the pieces of the world around to get to places and unlock more world tiles. This is a cool, novel mechanic that I’ve seen about once before this, in a Flash platformer. The pixel art and music are fine, but not amazing, but it still looks like a complete, polished effort as a student game.
