openmediavault is the next generation network attached storage (NAS) solution based on Debian Linux. It contains services like SSH, (S)FTP, SMB/CIFS, DAAP media server, RSync, BitTorrent client and many more. Thanks to the modular design of the framework it can be enhanced via plugins. openmediavault is primarily designed to be used in home environments or small home offices, but is not limited to those scenarios.

Not sure what is “next generation” about it. Basically is it a Debian distribution with a web-gui. It works fine, but is a bit limited to what you can do with it. Also ZFS support isn’t very good, as that is quite recommended if you plan to do a NAS on consumer-grade RAM / hard-drives (due to well done redundancy and error checking).

An alternative that also works well (and has great ZFS support) is FreeNAS (Rebranded to TrueNAS Core recently).

But for needs beyond home NAS, aka selfhosting, it is IMHO better to just use a standard headless server OS like Ubuntu Server.

Certainly for more technical users but the less technical do prefer to stay on a packaged solution. The Docker stuff though is probably more functionally interesting than the OMV side itself.
