Original Title: TIL The Gospel of Judas, discovered in 2007, is one of many of “non-canonical” gospels from the same periods as the 4 canon gospels, and are, in some cases, arbitraliy excluded: Marcion, Judas, Mani, Apelles, & Bardesanes, etc. Some paint Jesus’s teachings as more dharmic.
The gospel of Judas is not on the same level as far as historicity of Jesus is concerned. It was not excluded “arbitrarily” but it’s telling of the story of Jesus, particularly the betrayal of Jesus, conflicts with the earlier gospels in key elements. Similar with the Gospel of Marcion which draws from the Gospel of Luke but omits passages that made it harder to for Marcion to teach that the God who sent Jesus was different from the God of Israel.
