A 27-year-old Indian woman has started a petition to put an end to the social evil of dowry. Dowries have been illegal in India since 1961, but the bride’s family is still expected to gift cash, clothes and jewellery to the groom’s family.

I had no idea the Woman’s family had to pay the man’s family in this area. I never got into anthropology outside of an introduction class, but these marriage customs between cultures are fascinating. How they evolve and how society evolves with them. With them still being practiced today is exciting. We all live on a giant rotating rock hurling through space, and this woman’s genetic offspring’s future has to take this custom into account.
