I haaate how many brands have switched to those stupid little detergent pods. My local grocery store only has like one brand that still has powder and it’s American.

I was looking for a new dog food brand recently because my dog’s kibble was American. I tried the ‘Inukshuk’ one I saw recommended on here in a different thread. The ingredients seem good and I liked that I could order a sample bag for $5 rather than committing to an entire bag without knowing if my dog would like it because she’s extremely picky. Took about two weeks to arrive in interior BC from when I ordered it.

(My dog does like it, but that’s a pretty subjective criteria. Some dogs are pickier than others.)

Yeah, lately I’m finding I need to make trade-offs about what is important to me. Ideally I’d want Canada-owned/Canada-made AND less single use plastic, but sometimes I need to settle for something I can find, at least for things like dental floss where it’s a hygiene thing. (Though nice-to-have stuff I can just not buy it at all.)

If you don’t want to use a specific day, could do something like ‘Weekly Northern Novelties,’ ‘The Maple Market Mission’ or ‘Buy Canada Challenge’ or something like that.

When I was paying at a local shop recently, I mentioned to the owner I’m trying to pay cash now rather than card because Visa is a US company and he he thanked me, since using a credit card costs them money.

I was able to find this one locally, thanks! Though I was hoping to find a roll of floss since those pre-strung ones are kinda wasteful.

Suggestion: A weekly challenge thread for people to try at least one new Canadian product and post about it.

I’ve been doing this in my personal life. I find it shifts my thinking away from ‘ugh, I can’t find X’ and more towards 'Hey, what options are there that I have never considered because I’ve been sleepwalking through shopping and buying brands I recognize?"

Yeah, me too! Watched it all the time in the 90s and early 2000s. I just haven’t thought about it in a long, long time.

Am I the only one who was surprised to realize This Hour has 22 Minutes still exists?

For food, buying locally often means buying with the seasons, which isn’t a bad thing either. I’ve started trying to do this more and enjoy how much more flavour there is in the produce I buy. I have been used to always being able to buy anything I want in any season, but adapting to what is available is kinda fun.

Good suggestion. I’ll check that one next time I’m in there. I didn’t see anything Canadian-made at London Drugs, though.
