This is very strange and I’m sorry for multiple issues in one day, but I just switched to my inbox and it’s all someone else’s account.
I’m @lillypip but my inbox currently shows someone else’s account. I won’t post it here, but I have screenshots if a Voyager Dev wants to see them.
I think I can reply to people from there (the buttons seem to work, but I won’t do it for obvious reasons).
Not sure if this is a Voyager or Lemmy issue, but it’s very seriously weirding me out.
e: it’s not even the same server. My account is on lemmy.ca and my inbox is [email protected] (not the actual account, obviously).
e2: my inbox isn’t that person’s inbox, it’s their outbox. All the content is from them, not to them. I’ve never interacted with this person to my knowledge.
e3: I was wrong: I HAVE interacted with them. A few hours ago, I messaged them to say a link they commented was broken. I didn’t recognise the name until I tried to message them as recommended in the comments here. I can’t message them now; it just hangs.
e4: restarting the app didn’t help, but rebooting my phone fixed it. Maybe it was a caching issue? Like I said, it was showing what was in their public profile (comments and posts), perhaps my inbox was stuck showing that? Anyway, it’s fixed now, so it seems like a caching issue, probably?
That’s very strange. If you were viewing private messages of another user, that definitely sounds like either a lemmy bug, or more possibly an instance misconfiguration.
If you want to send screenshots/talk more though, [email protected]. You could also ask your instance administrator.
It wasn’t private messages, I don’t think (though I stopped looking pretty quickly). It was comments and posts.
I think it was a caching error, since after I rebooted my phone it was normal again. I thought the buttons were working, but when I tried DMing them from there, the app stopped responding.
I’m pretty sure now their actual account info wasn’t exposed to me, it was just very weird.
Tbh just try to interact with a simple “this is a test message because something is fucked up and I want to know how bad.”
Then see what happens and report it on the github.
It’s hard to explain what I’m seeing, but that will just look like a random PM – I’m certain the person who’s account I’m seeing won’t understand any message I send.
It’s not a bad idea, but there’s no way that person will understand unless I weird them put by telling them what I’m seeing. Maybe I should because me seeing their stuff sort of compromises their privacy? I’m not sure. I just stopped looking once I figured out what I was seeing. I honestly don’t know what to do.
Honestly you should likely tell them anyway. Maybe something like “Hey, let me preface this with the fact that I seem to be able to see your DMs. This is a reply testing to see what happens, so I can provide more info in hopes of it getting fixed. I also wanted to make sure you knew that these don’t appear to be private, just in case there was any sensitive info. I don’t plan to go digging, but I thought it would be better for you to know.”
Thanks, you’re right. I don’t think I can see their DMs, only their comments and posts (what you’d see looking at their profile), but I’m not sure since I noped out once I realised it was someone else’s account. You’re right; it’s possible their DMs are in there too, and they should know.
In any case, if I can see someone else’s account, it’s obviously not private and that’s a problem.
Thank you for the advice. I’ll do that now.
If you’re seeing their comments and posts (which are public) it sounds like you had an interaction with them and have accidentally tapped on their name viewing their profile.
If you go back (or click back) you’ll get back to your inbox.
Yeah, I think there was a glitch. I restarted the app a few times and my inbox showed their profile info until I restarted the app, no matter what. It stopped after I rebooted my phone. It seems like it might have been a caching issue?
Thanks again. Unfortunately I can’t message them now; the app just hangs when I try. 😥
It turns out I did have an interaction with them after all – they were the last person I DM’d, to say a link they posted was broken. I hadn’t even noticed their username until I tried to message them just now and it showed my previous message.
