With our growth numbers and with kbin finally with Lemmy again, things around the link aggregator fediverse feel more active than ever. Today when browsing all on Jerboa I saw so many more communities, posts, and comments than even yesterday. It’s starting to feel like we have some real traction going on here. Let me know if you agree or disagree.

Some of my favorite communities are in the instances that Beehaw defederated from. However the instance I use chooses to federate with everyone so I can see everything from everywhere.
I decided to self-host my own instance for that reason. That way I’m actually totally in control of what I’m seeing. It does make finding new communities less organic, but it’s easy enough with the new listing tools. Probably not worth the money if all I ran on my server was Lemmy, but as an added service it’s great.
How easy was it to get up and running? I’d want to spin it up on my docker host and me be the only user
I do have a homelab and could easily self-host a personal Lemmy instance if I wanted. But I’m not sure if it’s worth the effort.
The ansible install on ubuntu wasn’t too bad, tbh. I haven’t touched anything backend since I installed, and it’s been chugging!
Yeah but if you have existing services I definitely wouldn’t use the ansible install
Oh for sure–I just spun up a new droplet to throw it on. There are Docker instructions as well.
I selfhost several things for personal/family use on my own hardware. I couldn’t get Lemmy working behind Traefik which is what I use as a reverse proxy.
So I decided to go get a cheap VPS, and since it was kinda overkill for a one person Lemmy instance, and the fact that it wasn’t on my home network, I decided I might as well let other people use it too.
And anyway I think even a one person instance on a home network was probably a bad idea. I expose some of my services through a reverse proxy but they’re not advertised or known to the public like Lemmy would be, federating and plastering my URL next to all of my comments.
Would be an interesting idea to fork and do a ‘Lemmy Lite’ which is just a single-person instance, doesn’t host any communities, but lets you join communities/federate with them the same way a full install does.
Yeah it seems simple enough. But even for a single instance user the would be many things to figure out, such as how to federate with other instances.
The biggest issue for me is the way that federation works is not really designed for self hosting. Self hosting means you manually have to search out and add outside communities.

If you are talking about instances, use the entire name. Try to avoid mixing your references between software and instances, otherwise it will be confusing and can cause misunderstandings. _

It is amazing to see it grow right before my eyes. Every day there is more communities, and every day I see bigger upvote counts on posts.
It is clear that even if majority of Reddit users stay there, Lemmy is not going anywhere. I’m honestly hoping that we’re going to hit a critical mass that will allow us to steadily grow even after things settle with Reddit. Maybe we already did :)Safe to say, I’m not going back.
The same here with kbin. There’s been a slow variety of posts and I am happy to see it!
I really love that since kbin and lemmy federate with each other, there’s really no real drama about the budding rivalry because whichever one you choose you won’t have to miss out on content from the other! Plus having two separate platforms only increases the diversity and resilience of the fedi-aggregator universe. It makes it harder to kill/write off and its also the end goal of why we’re all here in the first place! 😊
I’m really surprised how easy it was for me to stop going to reddit. I had several daily hours on there with the sync app. I guess I just like a sense of community and honest people trying to provide information or discussion about their favorite hobbies/interests, and I found it here as well.
I agree, but I really wish Beehaw had not defederated with the other two most popular instances. I understand why they did, but man fracturing this early sucks
The main mastodon instance got defederated by many other instances in the early days, but when they added more mod tools they were welcomed back in and they’re going strong to this day. Here’s hoping
My understanding is that this is the plan - the only reason for defederation is because that is the only tool available at this time, and the admins for Beehaw find it most important to continue pursuing their goal to form a community rather than replacing Reddit or growing for the sake of growth.
Agreed. I have an account on lemmy.world, but I enjoy the community and interaction with the posts on beehaw. One user made a post saying that the defederation hurt Beehaw more than the other instances, but Beehaw has a lot of strong, active communities that the other instances don’t have.

Definitely. As a fellow kbean, I was enjoying my time in our funny little walled garden, but the community suddenly expanding ten-fold overnight was pretty spectacular.

RIGHT. Yeah, with all the BS and the blackout on Reddit right now, I decided it was the time to check out lemmy and kbin. Liking jerboa so far! Haven’t really figured out the difference besides how the “subs” are laid out yet though. But, onward and upward.
So what is Jerboa?
It’s an Android app for lemmy. I just checked, and if you’re primarily registered on kbin it isn’t possible yet to log in with that account. Might become so in the future. Fedilab is another android app that I’m keeping an eye on for future kbin support.
Yeah, it’s interesting. I’m still getting the hang of both but it’s been fun. Won’t go back to Reddit, after the 30th when Apollo is officially down I’m deleting my accounts.
Don’t you have to delete the comments as well? Or does juts deleting the account delete everything. I’m considering this as well. The CEO is a creep.
Don’t do that. Deleting your account is enough and some of your comments might be useful info that doesn’t exist anywhere else.
Yes, but if OP is thinking of deleting to snub Reddit, then it makes sense that they don’t want the useful information to exist there.
I’m planning to go that route too. Does anyone know of good tools that allow me to download a list of my saved posts before I delete?
People did that on Twitter and Twitter has been resurrecting old, deleted posts. Reddit could easily do the same. Deleting doesn’t really delete any data.
Deleting one’s account publicly disassociates the user from their posts, but rest assured that won’t be the case on the backend.
I agree! Glad to see so much activity. I feel like there’s still a lot of preference for FOSS/Reddit/Fediverse topics as that’s obviously what brings a lot of people together here, so I think it will be a big milestone to see if some other non-tech communities take hold. Or maybe they won’t and that’s fine too! Just have to wait and see, and contribute where we can.
100%! I’m excited to see more growth. The federation between kbin and lemmy is great. I love that it can also federate with anything else using ActivityPub, basically.
Early days. But this place has real potential I’m feeling. Everything right now reminds me of the very early days of Reddit which is super ironic. Main thing for me is I’m have more fun watching this place build itself right now to ever consider gong back to Reddit full time, right now isn’t anything more than a good place to steal some good content to post for here.
Yep I’ve seen my super niche kbin community grow to almost 50 subs in under a week. Started off slow but gaining traction.
