I am having some issues burnishing some chrome tans. I would love to hear what everybody is using to burnish edges please

Beginner here, so grain of salt but my understanding is that generally chrome tan doesn’t burnish well and most use “edge paint” to seal and get a nice smooth edge on chrome tan.

It’s hard to burnish that’s true. However, I was also told that all leather burnishes. 🤷🏻‍♀️ So I think it’s a bit in the technique and a bit in product you use.

You can burnish chrome tan with tokonole. I’ve definitely found doing the edges on chrome tan never comes out quite as well as veg tan though. I know some people use edge kote or paint for chrome tan edges too, but I like the tokonole.

I use Tokonole pretty much on everything. I recently had a chrome tan though that was (for me) impossible to burnish. I tried a wooden slicker and canvas and all it did was fray. Does Tokonole work on all chrome tan for you? I am still quite the beginner so I wouldn’t doubt it’s me.

Edge kote is that similar to Tokonole or more a thicker liquid to coat the edge?

No some leather won’t burnish, it’s not just you. I’m not a pro at thus stuff either. Like chromexcel you can get a decent burnish on. But when I’ve used crazy horse and similar leather I just edge koted it instead. So it really depends on the leather.

That’s good. I use lots of different colours.

Ok thanks. I’ll pick up some Edge Kote then and see if I can work it with that.

I’ve read and heard people say that you can’t because of the leather structure after chrome tanning. You basically have to use edge paint.
