Let me start with saying that I love jellyfin and I cannot recommend it enough

Edit: just now watching a TV show over Chromecast. While.its streaming, I press back on the mobile.phone from which I’m casting. I go from the remote to the episode information and while the show continues to play audio, the video is replaced with information about the show. I go back to the show on my mobile, bit the video doesn’t come back. So I stopmyhe show to restart, now the app hangs. Restart the app but now the app only shows the login screen and it refuses to connect or login… Sigh. I still see the show info on the tv, still, turning tv off and on doesn’t help. I gotta go unplug the tv, wait for the tv to boot back up, now I can login again and continue watching. This cost me ten minutes of cursing and really makes me feel like the mobile app isn’t really tested very much, if at all. I know I’m complaining about free open source software but still. If it wants to be better than, say, Plex, then it MUST do better. I’d happily pay for this, that is not the problem, I want jellyfin, I want it to succeed, but jellyfin is making it really hard to enjoy the product.

Having said that: yes, please work on bug fixing. There are some hair pulling annoying bugs in the system as it currently exists.

Shows and movies get misidentified. This isn’t a biggie in itself as it’s fairly easy to just identify a shoe manually, but when I select the right show or movie, the submit should be instant and updates should be done in the background. Currently the update process takes anywhere from 30 seconds to various minutes while the web page just hangs. A lot of times it just completely stalls.

Then scrubbing… it’s gotten better, I suppose, but clicking the timeline is still risky business.

Then subtitles. Half the time when switching from one movie to another, the frozen subtitles from the previous one are still there and the subtitles of the new movie are displayed above. If you do this a few times, the screen is full with frozen subtitles, yay

Then mobile… the mobile.app is halfway usable. Has all the problems described above but with more instability. Loads of times, while I’m watching a movie, suddenly I get the login screen because… reasons? If there is a disconnect for a second, TRY AGAIN MAYBE?

Then using casting (using Chromecast) is barely usable. Once it works, it works and you can watch a movie, but lots of times, it can take 15 tries and 30 minutes to get a $+@(& movie to start casting correctly. If the cast program hangs on the tv, I have to unplug the TV which is very frustrating. DO NOT try to scrub using mobile. If you do that God knows where it’ll send you, and half the time it’ll hang, you have to restart the app, aubr even your TV. If you were halfway through a movie, well though luck, better start from the beginning because scrubbing to a certain point in time in a movie while casting is just plain not functional.

Then the biggest gripe of all. And this is something I see everywhere, even on Netflix… why is it so goddamned hard to remember what I was watching? If I binge watch a series and I go from S3E20 to halfway S4E2, then the next day jellyfin very helpfully tells me I was on S3E20. I then select S4E2 and want to resume halfway, where I left off, but jellyfin helpfully starts at the beginning. This is just an example, reality is worse. Again, Netflix had this too though less severe.

Again, don’t get me wrong. I’m VERY happy that jellyfin exists coz if it didn’t I’d start writing my own. I’m very happy to not have tondo that, but I do have to say that there are VERY many bugs that make using jellyfin stressful at best, and impose at worst, and most of these bugs should not be that hard to fix.

I really hope they’ll focus on stability of the mobile app and casting for a while to at least make everything functional.
