Such a shame, not much those pilots could have done.
The pilot slammed the brakes, likely saving hundreds of lives. There was a guy on the cockpit jumpseat who was ejected 320 feet in front of the cockpit and he survived.
This is 100% on Elon Musk and BigBalls.
One ATC at LaGuardia. Insanity.
ATC may have made a mistake here but the failure is clearly understaffing.
Air Canada should cease all US operations. The US is unsafe.
But how will Fat Fucks in Flip Flops get their much needed vacations?
Canadians should cease all US operations. The US is unsafe.
The US should cease all operations. The US is undafe.
If people stop taking their flights, they will stop flying.
So it was either a lapse with the ATC or the driver of the firetruck didn’t have clearance to cross.
ATC gave the go ahead for the truck and then seconds later said stop (ten times). The ATC later said they messed up. It’s a high stress job and I feel sorry for them; they made a mistake and will live with the guilt for their life.
apparently they were the only ATC on at that time.
Even if you have clearance you should probably still double check. I wanna be clear and say I’m not blaming the driver, I’m just saying that you put a lot of trust into ATC but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have your own checks. I’m just saying this as advice to anyone that works a dangerous job.
When I took classes on OSHA and MSHA the teacher would always go through incident reports and fatalities whenever certain things come up. 8/10 times those involved in fatalities were those with years or even decades of experience. When you get too comfortable with your routine you get complacent. We all do it. Even when our job isn’t high stress or dangerous. It’s a good idea to remind yourself every now and again to pay attention and not get too comfortable.
You know I’d probably check left, right before crossing an intersection, but I’m not sure I’d check up.
The plane was reportedly doing about 40kph; I think that would suggest to me that it was already on the ground when the truck started crossing. Perhaps that’s why the ATC forgot about it.
There’s no way in hell the plane was doing 40kph. That looks closer to 100mph.
Yeah, that sucks. This was the best audio i could find of ATC (sorry for IG link) and seems like they immediately realized the fuck up, but the truck kept going.
I don’t think it even registered at first for the truck that they were being told to stop because he’d just told the Frontier plane to stop
ATC gave clearance, and then immediately realized and told them to stop like 10 times.
That being said, any vehicle crossing the runway is required to verify physical clearance before crossing active runways for this exact reason.
A landing plane is bright as fuck, even after they’re on the ground. Those landing lights are like little suns because of what they need to illuminate for the aircraft at a distance.
That driver clearly didn’t even attempt to check the runway before heading out.
Yeah… ATC fucked up but the truck driver did NOT look both ways before crossing the street.
He trusted ATC that he had a clear path and was focused on another emergency.
I’ve driven around air side at an airport a couple of times, it’s not always immediately obvious if there’s a plane landing even during the day, especially If you aren’t particularly familiar with aircraft, even during the day.
This was at night, the driver was given the all clear, and there was an emergency they needed to get to quickly. So even if the driver looked to see if it were clear, being dark, all he would see is a bunch of lights in the sky. It would have needed more than a quick glance to see if the lights were of a landing plane or a plane that was just taking off, or even lights from a plane at all.
Worst five seconds of those pilots lives
And last, as both pilots died
Fuck
Very likely what they said too.
