ppl on reddit are complaining about torrents being used. it literally says it’s a temporary solution one, and two. guys idk if u know this but ppl seed torrents by having them on their devices… even if they end up dead links they can still very easily end up posted to a DDL service like pixelfed
Myrient and AI
The AI industry frenzy undoubtedly contributed to the original Myrient archive’s soaring costs, ahead of its closure announcement. Perhaps ironically, if Myrient hadn’t been saved, retro fans may have looked to AI to generate copies of their favorite apps and games of yesteryear?
Holy fucknuggets Tom’s Hardware has gone way downhill.
Yeah why play Spyro for the PS1 when AI can make it :) surely that will work with no issues or nostalgia ruined /s
This is why piracy is preservation. Torrents are just really damn good for this sort of thing.
This equivocates piracy and bittorrent tech as stated. That’s lame.
It does not, and that was not the intent with what I said.
I’m saying piracy (in general, as a practice) is preservation, because torrents help preserve media since they inherently allow for more resilient, redundant, decentralized hosting that isn’t reliant on a provider, like Myrient, which can just shut down.
What I’m not saying is that piracy and torrenting are the same thing, that torrents are only for piracy, or that this is piracy.
If libraries did not exist and you purposed them today, you would be labeled a pirate and likely used into oblivion by the 3 or 4 massive companies that “own” all media. It’s not strange that there is an overlap in the tools needed to preserve media in a robust, distributed way, and the tools used to distribute movies, music, and books.
I appreciate the sentiment, not the first time I heard this idea.
Question: is that not a strawman argument?
You present a hypothetical, one that has never occurred afaik, and argue that this illustrates the contradicting nature of the definition of libraries?I hope I misunderstood, please elaborate.
Great job to all volunteers who organized and participated in this initiative. And also, a big thank you to Myrient for having had so many games preserved all this time and for giving the community a chance to prepare for a time when it will no longer be around.
Non Tom’s slopware original post:
I’m the head mod of r/savemyrient. today, we got some amazing news from the myrient community backup discord server.
Long time no see. We’ve been kicking major ass in the background getting downloads completed and validated. We can now announce that the Myrient mirror is now 100% COMPLETE!! Total size is 385TB Work is now continuing on generating torrents and getting them available. Website will be back soon, had to get that ready for the next stage and it was easier to just take it offline to do that. More news to come!

Torrents? Yes, but another SaveMyrient mod has confirmed “Torrents is only a temporary solution as of now.”
That’s reassuring. I’ll donate where possible, half my NAS is Myrient sourced well before the shutdown announcement.
I didn’t open the article. I remember playing this game. Anyone knows the name?
Descent II
Descent, it’s the reason I play with an inverted mouse Y axis.
That game fucked my online gaming life for years /cry
I couldn’t play anything where they hadn’t added the ability to invert y axis…
Finally played a single game non inverted for like 6 months straight till my muscle memory finally broke.
Darude - Sandstorm
But if you mean the thumbnail/article graphic, just open the article and read the caption. It’s labeled.

It’s not a game, it’s an archive of games
I thought I saw an earlier story that suggested they may try to bring the site back if hardware costs come down to earth, but I may have imagined it. Did anyone see that?
I’m just sad its Torrents now. I personally avoid Torrents whenever “piracy” is involved, because everyone who connects to the same Torrent can see my IP.
Are there actually any alternatives that are more secure? No matter how you aquire your media online your IP will be exposed to someone.
The problem for me is not that it is exposed to “someone”. I am okay with Myrient getting my IP. The problem with Torrent is, that anyone joining the session gets all IPs from everyone who is connected at the moment.
I just don’t understand what you are protecting yourself from, in my opinion if anyone can create a list of all of the pirated content you downloaded, you’ve already lost all security. A VPN should always be used.
Use a vpn, or better yet a seedbox, or hell even i2p. There’s plenty of options. Torrenting is one of the highest forms of piracy, it keeps the media alive long after whatever the current best site is goes down.
For archival I am curious if there’s an IPFS efforts. I don’t know too much about ipfs but would like to learn more.
