First, Israel’s only objective is to destroy Iran so that any moral opinion against Genocide is without “moral authority”, and is why all progress in negotiations get short circuited by another war.
Second, US can “declare victory” by negotiating a nuclear deal with Iran, and for Iran removal of all embargoes/sanctions and assurance this doesn’t start again in a few years is also victory.
Simple solution: US buys enriched uranium from Iran for $10m/kg, with possibly a tapered amount over long term. $50M/kg is still a better deal than uniting world against US.
If the US refuses ceasefire with Israel control, the global economic collapse is avoidable by world renting an IRGC soldier for say $10m per trip, to guide the ship through Iran’s coastline with big fat Iranian flag on the ship. Ships need Iranian insurance not Zionazi axis insurance.
The US was unable to resolve Yemen blockade against unfriendly ships in Red Sea. Iran has 20-50x Yemen’s rebel capabilities. The naval escort fantasy only results in extreme humiliation for US.
Not to mention ego collapse.

This is the wealthiest, most powerful nation on earth. The only way either the Navy or the economy collapses is because the billionaires see profit in it for themselves.
We have the means to easily pay for everything, but the greedy bastards calling the shots want it all for themselves. If the shits who have stolen all the income of this nation paid like they did between 1945 and 1970, the debt would be obliterated in a few years and we could have universal healthcare, childcare and elder care.

Never mind the fact that workers aren’t going to sail to their deaths into “death valley”. Even with hazard pay it’s going to be hard to actually find crews for every vessel, and the costs of insurance would be enormous.
It’s a geometry problem. We’re not talking the Suez Canal here. You don’t seem to realize just how wide and deep the strait is. Crews not wanting to run the blockade is another matter, but there is no possibility of physically blocking the strait. You could sink every ship on Earth into it and it wouldn’t even notice.
It’s only 24 miles wide at its narrowest point. You’re right that they couldn’t clog it completely, but making the waters un-navigable for large oil tankers seems doable. Especially since the crews wouldn’t just have to watch out for the sunken ships, but also large and dangerous chunks of floating debris and hazards they can’t see under the water.
The imagery conjured by “death valley” to me is a boat graveyard - endless wrecks from shore to shore.

I’m guessing this situation is the existential threat they feared most. They are ruthless. Revenge is in the culture (so I hear), so I think they are acting on “if I’m going down, you’re coming with me” mode.
