I’ll probably get hate for it but I’m not even sure 4K is worth it. I bought a 4K TV a few years ago and while I can pull up specific 4K content or find specific shows from time to time, I’m only getting 1080p a majority of the time, but unless I really stare at it, I can’t tell the difference.

Sure, find me a 1080p vs 4K content clip and ask me to watch them side by side, and I can see the difference. But ask me to watch them back to back with a quick break between… And it’s the same show.

I’ll pick the highest quality when it’s available… But I’m happy with whatever I’ve got.

4K content on streaming is pretty terrible - so I can’t blame you for that opinion.

      But comparing a 1080p Blu-ray to a 4K copy makes it a lot more noticeable, akin to watching a 480p DVD next to a 720p Blu-ray.

Lines are crisper, you can notice a lot more detail (skin texture on close-ups), background objects are clearer - nothing exactly revolutionary, but still an improvement nevertheless!

To make 8k a thing they casually ignored that you need content for it. Content that takes 4x the space, bandwidth, and processing power for it.

First no one in Hollywood signed on to make 8k content. Then already very few have bandwidth that can reliably handle a 4k stream, let alone without a ton of compression. Then also for what physical media there is we would need a whole new format to fit an 8k movie.

And then gaming. We barely get true 4k put of gpus that came out only last year. 8k was announced during the 3000 series, which the 3090 was declared as an 8k GPU. Which, as an owner of one, it can barely handle cyberpunk at 4k.

So yeah, incredibly stupid of them.

To be fair, we’ll probably get there at some point. There are some reasonable large size/viewing distance pairs where 8k can make a difference.

But you’re right, we’re not there, and we’re not especially close. Maybe in 8-10 years, it’ll be a more serious endeavor. But it’s probably not an upgrade most people will get much out of then.
