A 32-year-old Chinese programmer who died suddenly after working intensively for years received a new work task message eight hours after his death.
Is this unusual? I feel like in our modern hellscape of capitalism, this probably happens frequently.
This happened last December where I work in the US. Unlike most Chinese companies we have a pretty reasonable work life balance but the dude wasn’t near retirement age and just died in the middle of the night. It’s not like the team could have known in the AM why he didn’t come in. That was a sad day.
“This is his mother. He died from being overworked.”
“I don’t think you’re considering how this affects the team. I’ll see you in an hour.”
If the management was notified about his death, then this makes it even more hilarious.
The Guangdong Second Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital pronounced Gao dead that afternoon. The cause of his death was a sudden heart attack, which could have been the result of overwork.
