Donald Trump’s threat to take control of Greenland “one way or the other” has left the territory and its sovereign power Denmark reeling and the rest of Europe scrambling for ways to stop him.
After the shock of the US’s military raid on Venezuela Trump’s ambition to put Greenland next on his hitlist is no longer being seen in Europe as bluster or fantasy, but a serious intention, driven by ideology, neo-imperial expansionism, US thirst for critical minerals, or all of the above.
Trump’s self-confessed disregard for international law is again exposing the painful dilemma caused by Europe’s crippling dependence on the US for military security: do they confront him or appease him, even as his rogue-state actions mirror the Russian invasion of Ukraine they say is illegal?
Further than they’ll go to protect Ukraine from Russia.
The world is run by and for idiots.
Could the Media start doing its job and write how insane this behavior by the US actually is?
This is not normal and the Media is complicit by just treating this as another random news story. It is not. It is utter insanity, total destruction of the western security apparatus and the foundation of geopolitical stability.
Some European sources are stating the obvious and using honest language. For many Western nations they still seem to be playing with words 'cause they’re scared of the repercussions.
Well. Massive radioactivity, blindness, and a forever dusty sky will make people very sick. This means American health execs can make a lot of money if America launches a surprise invasion of NATO.
If they were serious at all about the threat, they would expel all the US forces currently in Greenland.
Those idiots haven’t been able to survive in all year summer mountains (Afganistan Vietnam ) So they will obviously succeed in all year winter mountains ( Greenland ). The question should be how long until US Army fails to winter and run away.
I’m sorry you believe that.
Maybe I’m continuing to be naively optimistic, but it’s hard to see military brass agreeing to attack nato troops
Personally, I think this is more about pushing Europe to de-fund social services and have that money go to the military
They also hope this will cause a right wing resurgence as people get angry over funding problems
With Ursula Von Der Leyen at the helm? fuck all, Europe first needs a leader that has Europe’s best interests in mind, Ursula is only interested in profit and misery.
Not far enough I fear
I would say this is not strictly news. It reads more like opinion, and is part of this new “This is Europe” newsletter. I don’t know why the Guardian put this article in their news section.
I think it’s more like news analysis than straight news or opinion. The line for me is that it’s bringing together recent reporting to get a sense of what Europe will or could do rather than making an argument for what Europe should do.
We will see.
