A recent post made me want to share and see how other people are carrying and towing voluminous stuff with bicycles. Show us your #carryshitolympics, or just regular hauls.

For example, I live on an archipelago and have a kayak and a SUP that I carry around with bike trailers. Depending on my destination and what I’m carrying, I use an Aosom trailer with a flat bed, but most of the times I can get away with a lighter Burley Travoy. Here are some pictures.

    Me and the boys heading out for a camping trip. My bike is on the left. Not exactly utility cycling but close enough. When we got to the campsite and put our stuff down, we went to get some groceries for food. It was then that we realized the roads were not safe enough to ride so we had to take the MTB trails to the grocery store. 2 fixed gear, a hybrid, and my gravel bike were loaded up with food on black diamond trails. We passed some confused guys on full suspension e-mtbs that day.

    How do you like the kayak+bike trailer combo? I’ve been thinking of getting a small kayak and using that exact setup.

      The kayak I have is limit for the Travoy. I got another bag just to shape it into something that can fit between the wheels but it’s still a bit big. Also the Travoy is attached to my rack and it’s not ideal to pull weight. It can be attached to my seat post but then maneuvering with the panniers is difficult. This setup works but having a foldable or inflatable that packs small and compact helps a lot. It’s much easier with the SUP.

      I prefer to use the Aosom flat bed for the kayak because I can bring more stuff and don’t have to pack everything so tightly, but it’s large and difficult to get in and out of my building’s elevators.

      If I had a garage and wouldn’t need to use a tiny pedestrian ferry to get to some islands, I’d use the bigger axle mounted trailer. But because the Travoy can easily be detached and shoved in a corner of an elevator, or a metro, it wins at being the go to.

      My only two annoyances about the Travoy is that first, it has a tendency to want to fall on its side if going a bit ‘fast’ and a wheel bumps on something. The second annoyance is that it won’t stand upright on itself with all that weight, but apparently the newer models have better stands and I might be able to just change it.

    I’m boring, panniers and/or a backpack. Got a front basket (Wald?) that I hate - holds fuck all weight and unbalances the bike with anything decent in it.

    I tried to build an e-cargo bike out of an old Australia post delivery bike but the bike was too small for me, shame as it was rated to 190kg.

    I’d love a mid-drive, belt-drive dutch-style cargo-bike where I can put someone on the front and rear racks without issue.
