NORAD (North American Air Defence) does not differentiate.

The closest NORAD jets were in Washington State. It is not complicated.

The same thing could happen in reverse.

So I wonder why we don’t have an air base in BC.

IIRC it’s mainly used for search and rescue.

True, though it doesn’t base F18s for this kind of mission.

CFB Comox is the RCAF’s primary air defence installation on Canada’s Pacific coast and serves as the home base for maritime patrol / anti-submarine aircraft and search and rescue (SAR) aircraft, both fixed-wing and rotary-wing .

I was mainly responding to the claim that there’s no base, but I really don’t see the value in stationing a combat squadron there.

In the case of an actual foreign invasion, there would be enough time to redeploy from elsewhere.

For real, it’s a bit insane that there’s no air base on our country’s border… Makes you wonder what would happen if we were attacked…

NORAD was supposed to protect us, we just never could have guessed it would have been the US attacking us.

NORAD was about keeping Canada from developing our own fighter jets and becoming independant from the US military.

Amerika was afraid of the AV Roe Arrow and the chinook engines as they were better than anything the US could even think of. The F-22 took lots of inspiration fron the Arrow

By who, Alaska? Anything else will be spotted hours before they show up or be so much more of a problem (like a fleet of submarines) that a base or too closer to shore is pointless.

Yeah, the most imminent air threat has historically been over the pole, which is why CFB Cold Lake exists.

The squadrons on Vancouver Island are for surveillance and search-and-rescue, which is entirely sensible for the coast.

My guess is US air bases in Washington were closer to Vancouver so Norad activated their combat aircraft. I think this shows how tightly integrated US and Canadian air defenses are. I think we better draw up some plans in case US becomes the enemy.

It’s definitely a case of NORAD working as designed. Which is good!

The fact that we’re borderline amazed that it’s working as designed is much less good.

And worried about the fact that NORAD won’t protect us from NORAD members.
