How about no. We should not embrace any economic ties whatsoever with nations who are idealogically and politically incompatible with our own.

What nations do you view as ideologically and politically compatible with Canada? Is your end goal preservation of the Canadian status quo vis a vis capitalist electoral democracy?

How bout we just do what’s right and good and not sacrifice our humanity, decency, privacy, and sovereignty.

People who always want more are the reason many people don’t have enough.

    China is an economic answer.

It is not a moral one.

    Neither is the US.

And let’s not pretend we are saints, our gov has always been shadowed by open secrets of moral terpitude.

Maybe we can just be better and focus on doing good here with what we have and let others forge ties with us.

And that’s the kind of attitude I don’t want to be a part of.

        Besides. We’re power bottoms.

See, you’ve already lost your sense of humour.

Look, each of our govs are all responsible for a genocide or two.

trump is an Antichrist / beast of the Apocalypse.

            Xi is the 3rd horseman.

They both want to know what kind of porn you watch.

They’re equally re/oppressive, vile, power mad, and have bad hair.

If all you care about it economic prosperity… I have some bad news for your core tenets.

If all you care about it economic prosperity… I have some bad news for your core tenets.

It’s not about what citizens care about, although we’re finding out how much average citizens care, right now, and as the robbing of the average citizen to fund the ultrawealthy and their sociopathic world genocidal tendencies continues to accelerated, I think we’ll really see how well those values hold water. People already whine about can’t miss work, they have better weapons, it can be worse. Newsflash, we’ve not scratched the surface of bad.

Anyway, as was recently noted elsewhere, governments have interests dictating policy and alignment. Nothing more, nothing less. The people either have decency and nobility, or they don’t. Just don’t go expecting governments to. There may be an exception or few, but those are probably the ones the West demonize the most, in the interest of maintaining economic hegemony. Not for you or me, but the money masters and power brokers. They won’t give us a farthing more than absolutely necessary to keep us from dragging them from their gilded beds and toilets that occupy their ivory towers.

I’m glad someone mentioned it’s possible and needs to be considered.

That said, if we come to rely on them it would be trading one authoritarian nationalist bully for another. Europe is equally powerful and actually shares our values.

Edit: Can someone repost this? It’s paywalled.

I wonder how wealthier Canadians feel about intellectual property laws with regard to manufacturing power houses like China.

I will gladly embrace China as soon as they embrace human rights and maybe cut back on the genocide a little.

As soon as I read the title and noted the magazine, I already knew the reaction this article would receive. It doesn’t matter, if it penetrates the fog of illusion for one.
