Thread title. I’ve been starting up this as a hobby, but am now interested in making things out of nicer wood than the fir you can find in Home Depot. Google will return big box stores, but personal recommendations are better. Where do you guys source your lumber for small projects?

What kind of lumber? I’m from the interior, but have bought lots of non kiln dried hardwood from random small mills in the Fraser Valley. If you’re looking for good quality KD stuff, Windsor plywood has branches in gvrd or there’s Reimer hardwoods in Abbotsford.

+1 for Windsor. I don’t know what they’re like out there or how they compare to other options you have, but they are my go to place in SK. Whenever we travel to Saskatoon for appointments, etc, I try to stop in, if only to marvel at the selection.

Honestly not really sure. Just getting into wood working and I only have a small garage for workspace. Looking mostly for small volumes of wood, and maybe medium sized stuff for furniture like cabinets and shelves. Looks like there are a couple locations not too far from me. I’ll check them out!

There’s also a small business called tree2table in Chilliwack. The guy has a buttload of sweet hardwood he has milled solely from salvaged logs. Highly recommend checking out his wood supply, if you get more into wood working.

Windsor Plywood has been my go-to for years and years. Their selection is good, staff are helpful, and they did a good job keeping shit in stock even during peak COVID. They’re not cheap, but I also haven’t had to pick through an entire stack of plywood to find a singular piece that was straight and undamaged enough to be usable, unless some other big box stores…

PJ White is my favourite - near Lee Valley on SW Marine. I haven’t purchased anything since they changed ownership.

I also have a phone number of a tree feller who processes some of his cuts, but I haven’t called him. If there are a couple people interested he might be willing to sell.
