The NJPW Junior Heavyweight title (and jr. Tag) has a weight limit of 100 kg, similarly Wwe’s old Cruiserweight had a 205 lbs. limit. I was thinking that could be an interesting story if someone won it when he was under the limit than at some future time the whiny heel who can’t beat 'em gets him weighed and sure enough he’s overweight.
I don’t remember anything like that happening, but I’m no wrestling historian.
I recall AEW used to do weigh-ins but I didn’t recall any of their titles actually having weight limits.
Come to think of it I’m not sure how they’d handle that if it happened in boxing or MMA either.
I 100% can be wrong here, but as far as I know the Champion only needs to conform to the weight limit when they win the belt. If they go over the weight, they don’t automatically lose the title, they just had to meet the weight requirements when they won it. Though, they’d have to be within the weight limit again to defend the title, so I guess if they are challenged when they don’t qualify they might be disqualified?
Trying to look it up after reading the post, it seems you’d have to look at individual promotions for their specific rulings on how it’s handled.
If I remember, someone (I wanna say Matt Hardy?) won the Light Heavyweight/Cruiserweight title at one point, and the whole gimmick was people questioning his weight and him avoiding scales, etc
In combat sports usually if a champ doesn’t make weight before the fight they either a) have to drop it or b) make a deal with the challenger that they get more of the purse to risk getting put in a coma by someone 15 pounds heavier than them, depending on the promotion
Given the business is a work, it probably doesn’t happen often if at all. Oh such and such champ gained 8 lbs and is over the weight limit? Cool keep billing him at his fake weight instead who cares?
If it were to be noticeably different? Like Kosei Fujita disappears for July, comes back in August 50lbs heavier, he’d probably have more to worry about with keeping his employment than the title lol.
MMA, it depends on the organization. I think UFC does a pay deduction if you don’t make weight, Rizen I know at least once made a guy apologize to the fans in-ring to shame him, not sure if that’s standard, etc etc. Not sure if it’s different if its a champ doing it or a basic bitch.
Well he could loose 20 lbs and say he gained 100 because he got a new gf or something
