So who’s not in favour of adopting the euro and what arguments do they have?

The leader of the pro-Russian Vazrazhdane party Kostadin Kostadinov told the protesters that the country will be stripped of its currency.

“Someone else will decide how we spend our money, the Bulgarian budget will be approved by the European Central Bank,” he said. “This is an anti-state coup, this is treason.”

There are valid arguments against Euro adoption. It might make sense for core/old member states but for everyone else fiscal union without a common budget is just a recipe for disaster like Greece getting strong-armed by Germany into ruinous austerity. So maybe let’s discuss that rather than accusing certain positions being pro-Russia because Russia has a tendency to sow unrest abroad using actual existing issues.

If this was an article with valid arguments in it, i’d have commented about that. I would want any country to adopt the Euro if it would hurt their economy or downgrade the financial means of the people there. I made that comment after learning about the fact the pro-russian opposition was behind the demonstration. Exactly because Russia has a tendency to sow unrest abroad using actual existing issues, and this article makes me believe this is the case here.

It’s very counterproductive to do this. As said, Russian propaganda is clever and doesn’t need to invent new issues, just finds ones that resonate with people. If we start going around saying something people want is wrong because there’s some connection to Russia and leave the issue unresolved, people will start voting for the only alternative they have - pro-Russia parties.
