I don’t know if Europe’s problems are similar to the corporate landlord driven problems that the US is having, but if they are, there is an easy solution. The UK did this all up until Thatcher and it worked great: Just have the government buy tons of homes and rent them out at non-profit-seeking rates. This punctures the bubble in rental rates that will otherwise definitely develop over time, and makes it so we can all get back to the business of normal life without having to be serfs in our own little pay-the-lords-for-the-privilege-of-existing system. A lot of landlords actually wound up just selling their properties because there is no point in trying to hold on to them to rent out, it’s just not really profitable anymore without needing to “ban” it or otherwise interfere with their private property rights.
Of course, because it works well and makes it harder to make a living by doing nothing as a wealthy landlord with lots of time on your hands to spend talking with politicians, it is incredibly hard to make happen anywhere in the world that I know of. But, it works really well. It’s already been tried and proven.
We are all humans after all, so same shit here and there.
