I am once again here asking for a product, fully expecting with yet another “you probably won’t find a Canadian alternative for this”. I was surprised with the smartwatch + fitness tracker options last time, so I think this might be worthwhile too.

Does anyone know of an energy monitoring plug? Too many of these are made in China by Chinese and American companies, so I’m hoping to find alternatives here.

Ideally, I’d also like to hook it up with Home Assistant, and either via Zigbee or Matter. If it’s WiFi-only, that’s fine too, but preferably not, cause I don’t want to add more WiFi devices on my network, if possible.

Oh interesting! But dang it’s pricey! $40+ for a smart plug!

I have the heavy duty relay on my water heater, their water main valve and a bunch of leak sensors.

They are not cheap but the build quality is good. And you probably won’t find many Canadian, energy metering outlets that will be priced cheaply.

I read that you can flash some of those with ESPHome if you don’t want them tied to their OEM. I don’t have the tools for doing that though.

        You can.

You can also flash them with homebrew code if you want (I’ve done one just for the experience)

At this point buying Chinese made in China or perhaps European made in China might be the least bad option. At least they’re cheaper and less money goes to an American multinational tumor. But you gotta make sure it’s actually safety certified. I have some ZooZ Z-Wave units, but I’ve also been eyeing Aeotec.

Indeed there is a Canadian alternative.

DLink is a Canadian company, been around forever.

Here is a link to their single smart plug. They have other plugs as well as tons of other stuff. Routers, cameras etc etc.

      According to Wikipedia

D-Link Systems, Inc. (formerly Datex Systems, Inc.) is a Taiwanese multinational manufacturer of networking hardware and telecoms equipments. It was founded in 1986 and headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan.

Damn I always thought they were Canadian and had their stuff made in Taiwan or China.

I’ve heard many say DLink’s a Canadian company but I guess we now know it’s Taiwanese. So I don’t blame ya there for mistaking it.

That said though, DLink is mired in controversies, and in my experience using any of their devices, they’re pretty terrible to use.

I am showing my age. I used to buy off them (client requests) for various products but that was 30yrs ago.
