The phasing out of the coins will mean businesses will need to round prices up or down, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), who first reported the story.
“Confirming the WSJ story, the Treasury has made its final order of penny blanks this month and the United States Mint will continue to manufacture pennies while an inventory of penny blanks exists,” a Treasury spokesperson said.
I’m gonna need to hoard a roll of shiny pennies for those souvenir coin crushing things.
For real, what happens to those?
We still have pennies in the UK, and the machines that used to cost £1 and 1p now just cost £2 by card and they provide the copper blank inside the machine.
We have them in Canada. There it usually a box of copper planchets next to the machine.
I visited Denver mint and got a free mint condition penny (and a blank) while I was there. Gotta hold.onto that, might be worth something if it’s one of the last years
Oh yay, we’ll need more of those bigger coins that cost more to make.
