Pocket will be shutting down on July 8, 2025. This is very disappointing as I love the compatibility with my Kobo.
Wallabag is a fine alternative to pocket.
I am currently trying Wallabag and like it so far. Being able to self-host it is definitely a plus. I also like how clean and simple it is compared to how bloated Pocket has become, but it does not have the official integration with Kobo. It looks like there is a way to use Wallabag by installing KOReader. I will look more into that if I decide to stick with Wallabag long-term.

Imagine that someone collected and kept the bookmarks there, and now they will disappear. Another reason to remember that you do not need to store anything important remotely.
Finally! Good news. One less thing to remove every time I install Firefox.

I actually quite enjoy the functionality, especially as I try to move away from centralised aggregation like Reddit.
I just don’t like the privacy and monetization tactics used by most of the solutions in this niche.

rss/atom feeds?
RSS is good for “I like this site, please show me new content when it releases”.
But Pocket was more like “I stumbled across this article on my phone, I want to read it later so I’ll save it and sync to other devices, I don’t necessarily care about this site”
ohh, now it makes sense. I was referring rather to:
I try to move away from centralised aggregation like Reddit.
believing you subscribe to reddit or similar link aggregators to keep up to date with certain topics (subreddits, communities on lemmy), and usually by subscribing to the rss/atom feeds from which people share URLs most of the time and which you are interested on, then you mostly can discard such link aggregators. Lemmy offers rss feeds in case you want to follow up a community without subscribing to any lemmy instance, and I believe reddit hadn’t killed it’s similar rss feeds per subreddit.
However if it’s just for one interesting post you find, then rss/atom feeds don’t provide what you want. However, if you like a post from a rss/atom feed, most rss/atom readers allow you to include the link into favorites, so that they are available for you whenever wanting to come back to such post or to actually get deeper into it. Favorites would have a somehow similar functionality to pocket, but I agree it’s not the same, since the sources have to come from a feed, as opposed to any generic URL, however if your URLs sources come from recurrent blogs or sites, and they offer rss/atom feeds, then this would work. I’m kind of following this approach to have my rss/atom personal link aggregator, :)
Good. Was frustrating to have Firefox finely tuned w/ extensions and whatnot to eliminate invasive ads, but their front page “news aggregator” ignored all of those rules and served up only ad-infested trash
The aggregator is being kept. It’s just the bookmarking/reading service that’s shutting down.
i just imported all my pocket bookmarks into firefox bookmarks, and it kinda works even better
It’s always interesting when the first I hear of something is when it dies.
You should be happy its the first you hear about it. It wasnt popular when it came and it never became popular and still it took a decade to fucking die.
It got bundled with Firefox in June 2015 and now exactly 10 years later, its finally gone.
Time to move those developers to more AI products
