Honestly it sounds like the dev got told by one of the publishers to remove it otherwise no franchise for you. The rest sounds like copium from the dev justifying the removal.

I was wondering what happened between the first time I played it at launch and playing again last year. I don’t remember the actual story but I do remember the setup for the missions being different and having a really dark and bizarre ending.
