“Between the flooded ferries, the Russians intend to establish a boom fence. In this way, the enemy seeks to protect the Kerch bridge from defeat,” the GUR said at the time.
Ah, several ferries sunk to act as basic attachment points for chains. What a cost-efficient strategy that definitely bodes well for Russian capabilities! /s
This might work, or the Ukrainians might just send a first drone to clear a path for other ones, or use a submersible drone, or a missile once they get closer, or…
Ferries seem like the kind of thing you want to have above the water when your bridge keeps blowing up. It’s like reinforcing your problematic elevator by ripping out your stairs.
To be fair, strategically Russia cannot hold onto Crimea and by extension most of the captured territories without the bridge whether or not they have ferries. They’d never survive the loss of the bridge which is quite likely to result in total massive domestic upheaval.
The ferries don’t matter because without the bridge, the ferries are useless anyway
Exactly. Like, maybe they barely floated, but this is Russia and standards for a commercially useful vessel would be incredibly low. They did this because they couldn’t arrange an alternative less-wasteful solution in a reasonable time frame; that’s the only logical explanation.
