As an American who hates 1/3 of the country and is really pissed off at another 1/3 who couldn’t be fucked to vote even when there was early voting like everywhere, this makes me really happy to hear

Why the fuck would I want to visit the United States?

They’ve already kidnapped/ unlawfully held a Canadian citizen without anything resembling due process.

    So the proposition is:

Please come back, put money into our local economy, but we have no control over ICE kidnapping you.

Also, we want to annex you.

Also, even if we somehow get rid of Trump, we will collectively do nothing to prevent the rise of another Facist movement.

As one of your southern neighbors, I agree with you. This is not a safe place for you or anyone from any other country right now.

Hell, it’s not a safe place for me.

I’m just counting the days 'til they declare trans people like me not just unpersons but actively illegal, and hoping the passport I requested actually shows up…

I hope your passport shows up too… but I have a friend of a friend who is post-transition, but had their passport reverted to their birth gender because DoS is apparently doing that now. If that happens to you: I think maybe you have a good case to drive up to the Canadian border and request asylum/refugee status or something like that.

It’s fucking insane that I’m even suggesting that to another American, in America. And it’s even more insane that it’s a reasonable and feasible idea.

As a Canadian, I think Canada should start accepting trans refugees from the USA. I also think we must absolutely not elect the transphobic MAGA wannabe Pierre Poilievre. It’s crazy that some Canadians look at what’s happening in the USA and want the same here, or think of nothing but wanting to pay less tax even if it means destroying everything that makes Canada good.

I never tried changing the gender marker on my documentation because that always seemed like too much risk for so little gain for an enby like me. My government name only gets used at work anyway, and I’m content to let straight people assume I’m one of them so long as I set off every gaydar and transciever in range.

I just hate when the universe justifies my cynicism, it makes me feel like the stereotypical old anarchist.

Yeah, we know. Unfortunately we have a guy up here (Poilievre) who wants to do the same thing in Canada. Canadians, please vote to prevent this man turning Canada into the same Nazi shitshow as the USA.

Poilievre is a socially conservative shithead, but he’s not anywhere close to Trump on the authoritarian scale. I’d like it if we could keep the hyperbole out of our politics, thanks.

I’m responding to things like this:

Canada’s Tory leader vows to deport foreigners for antisemitic crimes

Now antisemitic crimes are one thing, but he includes pro-Palestinian “hate marches” which apparently means people protesting Israel’s attacks on Gaza and the West Bank. Designating protests against Israel as hateful and critics of the Israeli government and military as antisemitic is very much a copycat Trump policy.

I suggest those working in tourism start voting for democrats then. Your customers aren’t going to return as long as the current weirdos are still in charge.

I wouldn’t feel safe going to the US right now. I have no guarantee that my rights would be respected. It’s just a matter of time where a tourist is sent to El Salvador to prison.

As a Canadian, why on earth would I visit an actively hostile nation whose Head of State has repeatedly threatened invasion and annexation?

Maybe next time vote, and don’t vote fascist / narcissist / sociopath / liar / traitor.
One should think it wouldn’t be necessary to warn against that, but apparently about half the American population actually like that shit!?!

To those that actually tried to prevent this, we feel for you, but we are sorry, you are collateral dammage, victims of your own countrymen, there is really not much that we can do.

I tried to prevent this, and I’m fine with the damage this is doing / going to do. I don’t blame anyone who decides not to come to the States, wants to buy non-American products and services, wants to divest from US stocks and bonds. I wouldn’t trust us, either.

The collateral damage is absolutely necessary. If anything, the lack of prior collateral damage signified to American voters that putting a fascist back in office is just fine and dandy.
