It was surreal to watch this unfold in real time. And it reminded me of an important and eye-opening 2024 report, Disruptions on the Horizon, by Policy Horizons Canada. It identified 35 potential disruptions to Canadian stability.
Number one among the top potential disruptions: People cannot tell what is true and what is not.
federal law that would compel Meta to pay a fee that would go to Canadian legacy media outlets struggling in the face of social media.
On this point, it’s worth reminding everyone that PostMedia is US-owned. A huge chunk of “Canadian legacy media” has been acquired by PostMedia. There is very little independent Canadian-owned legacy media left.
I think that -by law- Canadian based news organizations must be owned by Canadians, period, and no multi national bulllcrap with “I have Canadian passport too, next to my US passport” tricks.
News outlets are too damned important to allow outside companies spew their bullshit claims.
Also, by law, news organizations must always be required and obligated to report the news as truthfully as possible, with retractions of same size if news was misreported or misrepresented

You may think that, but Postmedia appears to have evaded any rules that are in place.
My point.
If they break the rules, stop them. Fine them heavily for infractions where they obviously lie, jail time if need be. I don’t care what the news is as long as it’s truthful and realistic
