It hasn’t been for a long time. SCOTUS already declared Trump king, and Congress has completely abdicated its constitutional role to remove lawless presidents.

Trump is the most obvious symptom, but the underlying cancer is a deep-seated streak of fascination with authoritarianism in this country.

It’s easy to forget this, since the United States ultimately sided against the Axis powers in WWII, but there has always been a sizeable contingent of full-throated fascism supporters in this country.

They’ve spent decades honing their messaging and figuring out how to break the minds of Americans, and Trump is the culmination of that project.

People forget we were neutral during the start of WW2 and a lot of Americans supported Germany. We also had consecration camps for Asian Americans along with a history of racism against almost every one, including other white races.

Indeed. We’ve forgotten our history on many levels, and as such, we’re looking pretty well doomed to repeat it.

Toward the end of his speech, Trump quoted an unlikely source.

“Etched onto the walls of this building are the words English philosopher John Locke said: ‘Where law ends, tyranny begins,’” Trump said. “And I see that.”

    ominous prediction.
