There is a discussion on Hacker News, but feel free to comment here as well.
I wonder if it’s something to do with location? Maybe the nuggets change based on country (such as some ingredients and preservatives being illegal in some countries)
I got no idea tbh just guessing why they did this
That’s exactly what it is. G Maps uses geolocation and the McD app likely already bundles G Maps into it so they’ve just used that instead of adding a redundant dependency.
How is this news? You realize that McDonald’s operates in multiple countries around the world? And that each of those countries has their own regulatory body requiring its own specific ways of displaying nutrition information? And that McDonalds sources their meals and tweaks their recipes depending on where you are? American McNuggets don’t taste the same as Canadian ones which don’t taste the same as Thai ones.
Because the site breaks when you don’t allow location
How is that not covered by the comment you’re responding to? Yes they could and should ask for manual location entry/selection if it is disabled, but the story here isn’t “McDonalds relies on Google Maps Location Services [implied for no reason]” it’s “McDonalds doesn’t have a backup for manual location selection if Google Maps Location Services are turned off/blocked”
You know what you need to do next?
Spoof your location and see how things change.
