Not trying to start a war here, just curious why the new instance was created. Different purpose, different goals, or just 'cause?
We actually had a quick adjustment when we launched and immediately changed the name of the instance after the Pixelfed dev contacted us about the domain. You can see the pinned comment here: https://lemmy.ca/post/39411782
As for why both instances exist
We both launched around the same time. I think this is their launch post, which had it about a month before we launched https://cosocial.ca/@mwdawson/113839618312626769 By the time I learned about that instance, we already set up pixelfed.ca and were preparing to launch
I think there’s an advantage to having more choices available to users. Also lemmy instance admins often help each other out, and I’m sure it’ll be the same with pixelfed :)
Cool! As long as there wasn’t some deep ideological divide, that would make me want to swing one way or another.
Thanks for the input.
Pixelfed also has a bit of a different approach on scaling. It favors a larger number of smaller instances, as a way to distribute the load of hosting the photos.
A default config is limited to 1000 users.
Perhaps it was vowel play?
You hate birds or something?
Why not? The more, the merrier. Pixelfed.ca seems to be backed by the same organization that’s taking care of lemmy.ca, so I’d have more trust in that instance being more stable and lasting longer than pxlfd.ca which is hosted and maintained by god knows who.
So many fediverse instances remove vowels from theirs domain names. I think this is unfortunate as it makes new more normie users less likely to sign up.
Hey, vowels are expensive!
