With no passengers and no planes, Pakistan’s newest and most expensive airport is a bit of a mystery. Entirely financed by China to the tune of $240 million, it’s anyone’s guess when New Gwadar International Airport will open for business.

Looking at it’s geographic location, the purpose seems semi obvious:
This is basically the perfect location to provide complete air support coverage to the Persian Gulf, and also a perfect refueling stop for any longer missions running into the Red Sea/Suez shipping corridor. It’s also a dead straight line shot stopover for any flights going between mainland China and Africa.
The geopolitical military and logistics benefits are very significant for China.
