Rattled by a horde of MAGA trolls, here’s what I learned about today’s social media miasma.
Last Friday I made a post on Bluesky and X, concerning U.S. President Donald Trump’s description of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “Governor.” It occurred to me that, numb as we are to Trump’s stream of blather, the importance of that remark was being overlooked. It was an overt declaration by the president of the United States that he does not recognize Canadian sovereignty. That’s scary.
So, my post: “For a US president to refer to the Prime Minister of Canada as ‘Governor’ isn’t just rude. It’s a hostile act.”
The post got little attention on Bluesky. On X, for whatever reason, it went berserk. Over the weekend it racked up close to 3,000 reposts, over 29,000 “likes” and more than 5,000 replies. Those replies came almost entirely from Trump-loving trolls, piling scorn and abuse on my concerns. “Yeah but it’s Canada so who gives a fuck?” said one.
Do the responses represent a genuine glimpse of U.S. opinion on Trump’s bully-boy act?
Nazis are generally not a good benchmark for values or ideas. X is a nazi site.
X— You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.
They’re bots. 80 percent of those are unchecked bots. It’s shit stories like this that empower maga to do what it’s doing. 8 of 10 responses are bats…that one real redneck out there looks at them and thinks it’s ok to say shit like that, and the 10th person left for the fediverse.
We have to stop treating X like it’s a source of anything…it’s not. It’s a vile swap of rage click engagement fighting for the top spot.
I don’t think the shambling husk of Twitter is a good representation of the U.S. population. My impression is that Elon has driven away most good and reasonable people.

I wouldn’t be so sure. I remind you that Trump won the election.
He won due to apathy and stupidity, not active support from the majority of the total population. The very people who may have stayed home due to voter suppression for example could be the same folks bombing supply convoys for his fascist regime in due time.
Many many many lazy people and companies still use it and his echo chamber is reaching many many eyes.
X is only a haven for nazis and bigots anymore. It’s like I You’re trying to explain yourself to a racist wall. Why would you try?
Let his bots say what they want. Leave the platform entirely.
I came to a Nazi pub and there were nazis, how could that be?
Anyone who is still using twitter is either one of them or totally removed.
Xitter is a cesspit. Normal people have mostly left.
And yet media organizations still build whole news stories around embedded tweets (or xits or whatever they’re called now) and all kinds of organizations still use it to make announcements. They need to realize what it is and leave it to the Nazis.
There has been a big exodus, and it continues. It’s all part of Elon’s upcoming book, “How To Turn A Fortune 500 Company Into Twenty-Five Dollars In Cash”.
Just last week there was a petition passed up to our schools to stop using X to notify parents of important occurrences at our public schools. I’m interested in how this will play out, but don’t see any reason to keep X around as a social media platform.
Knowing the Americans there not too shocking.
