Residents of Alberta seem to be the most open to the concept of Canada joining the US as a new state, an idea US President Donald Trump has repeatedly floated over the past couple of months.
A new poll conducted by Research Co. on tariffs in Canada asked whether respondents were on board with the notion of initiating a formal process for Canada to become an American state, and Alberta led the pack in being the most responsive to it.
Alberta leads Canada in support of joining the United States, with 12% of respondents saying they would “definitely consider it,” followed by 7% saying they would “probably consider it.”

Could this have something to do with many of southern Alberta’s pioneer settlers having come from the United States after failing as settlers in Nebraska, Utah and other states in the land rush?

The most extensive single wave of Americans came to Canada between 1895 and 1915, after the railways were well established in the West and good, inexpensive land had diminished in the US. American farmers poured into Canada, making up nearly as many western settlers as those from the British Isles, who were less likely to farm. Some of the effects of this migration are still to be seen in the relatively high US-born presence in Alberta and Saskatchewan, in the proportion of farmers among the US-born, and more arguably, in political attitudes in these provinces quite different from the remainder of Canada.
I have spent around half my life in Alberta (not there anymore). The majority of rural and poorly educated Albertans seem to mainly care about 2 things: oil and beef. It’s honestly crazy how many farmers are pumping oil from their land, even within 30 minutes of major cities. And there are some extremely large scale oil operations in northern AB (Fort McMurray is kind of the main city for that).
Also, Alberta has always been super conservative (see the above paragraph on oil - no one wants to save the planet when they’re getting rich). Makes sense that the more right leaning portion of them would like Trump, they are all fat racist white guys too.
90% is just a guess since that apparently wasn’t the question that was asked, but with only 12% willing to confidently say they’d at least consider it getting to 1 in 5 “okay with it” is quite a stretch.
Imagine the Saddledome completely sold out. This means 2,315 of those people want to ‘definitely consider’ and 1,350 would ‘probably consider’ joining the United fucking States.

The difference isn’t with the word “consider”.
It is between the words “definitely” and “probably” … and adding those two percentages means almost 20% of Albertans are OK with becoming American.
That’s cool. They can move if they want. Lots of other citizens would welcome the opportunity to buy their homes/acreages.
But the land and oil stay with Canada.
Those Canadians either don’t know or don’t care about paying $300 to see a general practitioner. Each time.
So even in the province most in favour, they can’t scrape together 20% of the population that thinks this might be a viable option. Talk about nothingburgers.
