Hello! I recently got my Canadian citizenship and I’m looking forward to vote in the upcoming election!
But few days ago I came to know that there was a deadline for ‘registering as a liberal/conservative’ for voters. I didn’t know such a thing existed. What difference would whether I registered for the above or not? I assume I can still still show up at the polling station to cast my vote…?
Party registration allows you to vote for party policies and more importantly, the party’s leader during their respective conventions.
It has no bearing on your ability to vote in a general election.
Bring your ID and your voting card with you on election day and vote how you choose.
Also add that most people don’t register with a party so don’t feel compelled to
party’s leader during their respective conventions
This part is very important at the moment.
I highly recommend doing this.
Don’t worry about it.
It’s not required or normal to be a member of a political party as an average voter in Canada.
Counterpoint, it’s not enough to be a general election voter. If you ever thought that “all options suck” in front of the ballot box, a part of the solution is to vote in party elections.
Chaoticpoint, register for the party you aren’t going to vote for and try to get the opponent you’d prefer to be stuck with if your party loses the election. (Squint real fucking hard and you might even call it proportional representation!)
Edit: I realize afterward that proportional representation isn’t what this would be. More like single transferable vote. Eh, whatever my care level is zero now. Stop arguing with me.
That’s my plan. I’d prefer to vote ONDP but I voted in the OLP leadership, trying to get Nate elected. 😁
