Wow I’m in that book fog. Finished this arch of the story and just feel drained. While not the best book in the series in my opinion I still enjoyed it. Going to feel rough to wait 10 years (IRL time) for the next visit to main story Roshar. Hopefully the planned novellas and possibly some hints in other Cosmere works will scratch the itch.

I finally decided to read the story now that book 5 dropped. I read books 1 and 2 over my Xmas holiday and I’m now about a third of the way through Oathbringer.
I hate to say this, but I’m starting to understand why my partner never finished book 3. I’m really hoping the book picks up. I feel like I’m slogging through so many elements that… I just… don’t… care… about. It feels like this monstrosity is so large because the copy editors failed it. BUT, alas, I’m not giving up. There is still too much that I find interesting.
I’m hoping it picks up and that books four and five round things off well.
I don’t wanna feel drained. 😭 So much great story potential!
There are absolutely some slower sections of book 3 - namely a trek through a certain ocean
I promise it picks up through the end of OB and the beginning of RoW
Also, you should check out his other Cosmere entries. There’s some significant crossover as it’s a shared universe, especially with Warbreaker and Mistborn.
I read the first Mistborn trilogy and really liked it. I’ve got the next set of books in queue.
I’ve heard mention of Warbreaker but I’m not actually sure what it’s about yet other than it’s a part of the Cosmere.
Warbreaker is more political intrigue heavy than other Sanderson books. It’s mainly about two sister princesses, Siri and Vivenna. They find their destinies switched at the stroke of a pen. Colorful chaos ensues.
It’s a good read and pretty self-contained, but he’s said he wants to do sequels for it eventually (read: it’s been on the back-burner for almost 20 years. He’s just now getting to the Elantris sequels that he also promised…)
The biggest crossover to Stormlight is that it contains the origin of a particular sword.

I did read Edge Dancer before Oathbringer. I have to admit that I really just wanted to move on with the story though. There were little gems of worth in the book, but the character of Lift was a most challenging read. Almost painful.

Lift is pretty divisive, so I don’t blame you. She’s supposed to be the main character for book 6. Hopefully she matures a bit during the time jump after book 5 (promise this isn’t a spoiler, it’s been planned this way since the beginning) because otherwise 1k+ pages of her is gonna be grating.
Again not spoiling, but her flashbacks could be interesting, ie: visiting the nightwatcher, stuff with her mom, etc.
Dawnshard is definitely the better of the Stormlight novellas. It’s a fun sailing adventure about Rysn. Definitely pick it up after OB.

The cost is worth it in my opinion. The ending of book 3 is one of those endings that I wish I could go back a re read for the first time again. Enjoy :)

I downloaded it yesterday, and started re-reading the last bit of Rhythm of War this morning to get back into the story. Parts of the series did feel like filler you just had to get through to reach the important bits of the story. I like the premise though, abilities gained by the symbiotic relationship with spren, trust being broken and rebuilt. It’ll be good to wrap up this story to see how Sanderson closes it.
