He should’ve passed proportional representation with the smaller parties but he instead pushed for instant-runoff voting which is often called “ranked choice voting”

Oh my god. This is why I voted for him and it made me regret voting for him.

And now he regrets it too? I mean I suppose that’s kind of a good thing but I think mentioning it now just opens an old wound and pisses me off.

Even from a narcissistic point of view, getting a fair vote system would have made him be remembered as a notable PM forever. We’d actually have elections we enjoy voting in.

Yeah, we all regret it, too.

The only difference is we regretted it the second Trudeau torpedoed any chances of it passing and he only regretted it after becoming unelectable.

They’re two policies that are long overdue for reform.

We accomplished one of the two… I mean, mostly. The production side of things is absolutely bat shit stupid, but the rest is fine.

Electoral reform was a complete miss. Thanks Trudeau.

He could’ve kept going at the helm of the liberal party under pr and he would’ve made wiser decisions.

This country deserves a real choice in the next election

Electoral reform (defined as having a future election that uses anything other than first-past-the-post voting with a magnitude of 1) would probably have made it more likely that you’d be able to deliver that.

I genuinely don’t care if people first gain access to proportional representation or instant-runoff voting or a more significantly different voting system; I just want there to be fewer people burdened by governments that they don’t support.

I note that the parliament is only prorogued, so it seems there could be a new session before an election. That suggests there will still be a chance for the current MPs to implement electoral reform.

It’s only because Prop Rep is harder to grok than a different way of choosing the supreme leader, that’s all.

…citing a lack of consensus across party lines.

Way to leave out the the key quote. I can already picture the angry spittle on peoples screens. Everyone likes to omit the bigger picture for “trudeau bad” rhetoric purpose. He couldn’t unilaterally change the way elections are done. He’s not a dictator. Unless you actually want prime ministers to be dictatorships.

That key quote is mostly bullshit.

The study resulted in a clear recommendation for MMP, with a few options as to how to implement it. Most of the other parties in the parliamentary committee said they’d agree with recommendations. Then Trudeau said “No we’re not doing that, we’re going to go with ranked ballots or nothing at all.”

So the only lack of consensus was that Trudeau personally wanted something other than what the experts said would be best for Canada.

They didn’t even try. They didn’t see eye-to-eye with NDP on the first run at it, so they just stopped trying. It was never meant to go anywhere.

This is never going to happen top down. If you want actual electoral reform start working from there button up. We used to be allowed other forms of elections for municipal elections in Ontario but Doug fucked that up
