The Saskatchewan government is revamping its employment standards and asking the public for feedback on what needs to change. Some current and former restaurant servers said it’s time for new rules on tipping.

Tipping needs to be banned, if people won’t wait tables for minimum wage then they need to increase the wage

If this government decides to do anything it will 100% be in favour of the employer and not the servers. But odds are this government will do nothing to regulate tips because the lack of rules now already allows employers to screw the employees.

They might even do a split minimum wage, letting places pay servers less in exchange for the tips.

How about getting rid of tipping? We could just have employers pay a fair wage.

Furthermore, they said if people don’t tip on a bill, the server is responsible for paying the percentage of the tip that goes to the rest of the staff.

That’s just plain wrong. And if it’s not illegal already (theft), then it should be.

I don’t understand this. If the table leaves a 0% tip there’s nothing to split among the staff. How can the server owe anyone anything?

At some places wait staff need to “tip out” to share tips with kitchen staff, etc. This usually works by putting aside (for example) 10% of sales for back of house and the waiter/ress gets to keep the remainder. In this example, any time they are tipped less than 10%, they have to top it up from their own tips. If they were tipped 10% on a bill, all that tip would go to back of house and they wouldn’t get anything.

Beats me. As far as I can tell, everyone except the server is tipped out as if there were mandatory tipping.

I’ve started giving 1 star review for anyplace that asks for tip for preorder before I’ve even received anything or for drive thru. Please join me… They use shame and guilt as a weapon. We can also.
