I kinda want to do this just to get some petty revenge on the fuckers that plastered gas pumps with Biden stickers (which they then had to remove when gas fell back down to normal prices eventually lol)

So I was thinking about the way he worded this, 25% tariff until the border crossings stop. I think he might be onto a 4D chess move here.

If he tanks the US economy so badly that it’s financially detrimental to cross the border then the flow of people across the border will definitely come down. If he tanks the economy hard enough we may even see the flow reverse, at which point he can lift the tariffs and declare the job done.

He is already happy to make Americans ignorant, illiterate, and spiteful to outsiders; is he really going to baulk at making them dirt poor as well?

If I owned a store, I’d itemize the Trump Tariff on every receipt, and a total for how much extra you paid because of him.

        I love this

Edit: I also think taxes should be itemized on US paystubs, like is done in many civilized nations.

One reason so many in the US hate taxes automatically is because it is a black hole into which we have no insights (on paystubs).

Your paystub (in the US) should state how exactly much is going to Medicare, unemployment, social security, disability, and general state and federal income for various programs (highway repair, workforce development, etc depending how your state uses income tax). If this is not on each of your paystubs, speak to your payroll department.

You get a gross and net pay. The net pay shows how much you take home. But the taxes are taken out as big generalistic chunks, like Federal and State. You don’t get further itemization.

Ford, GM, Chrysler instantly regretting their republican pac contributions as Toyota comes to eat their lunch even harder.

(Toyota assembly and majority sourcing for USDM is done entirely within the US while domestic companies have mostly outsourced to Mexico heavily)

It will affect Canada a lot more.

Even with 25% tariffs, it will still be cheaper to make in Mexico. And they will no longer have to pay the workers the same as the US, as they do under USMC.

I recently read that the Toyota Crown is assembled in Japan. Has there been any hints of tariffs there?

Correct, that is JP built, along with a cpuple other small name models… And trump has flat said everything imported is gonna see a minimum 10% tax. seeing as how the Crown made up for <1% of toyota’s total sales volume for q3 2024, I doubt there’s going to be a huge overall impact to their sales competitiveness vs the Big 3’s entire lineup though

Trump vastly misunderstands how foreign dependent America’s bullshit economy of e-slop, finance, and exploiting health issues is.

A trade war right after he kicks out the only people who actually make shit in America would be fucking hilarious if it wasn’t so fucking dire.

    Roma’s $1.25/lb + trump = $1.56/lb Cucumbers .85/ea + trump = $1.06/ea Avocado .99/ea + trump = $1.24/ea Asparagus 2.99/lb + trump = $3.73/lb

And that’s at an affordable supermarket. Add 10-15% more for places like walmart, albertsons, kroger, etc.

Don’t forget to add an extra 25% for all the companies using the tariffs as excuses to raise prices further to extract profit.

They did it with covid, they’ll do it again now.

Are all cucumbers imported? Those can be farmed in the US, I believe.

I suggest starting a small garden for various vegetables and spices to save money. For those living in apartments, you can make some in your windows.

Mini leeks are probably the easiest. I actually got an overwhelming amount just from two pots and barely needed to do any kind of maintenance.

Have you tried carrots? They can grow in negative 8 degrees Celsius (around 19 degrees freedom units)

I think broccoli and Brussels sprouts also do well.

When it comes to cucumbers, however, growing a ton, and pickling them is perfect for using all year round, and pickling is also way easier than I first thought.

I’ve never tried this but how about one of those small DIY greenhouses? Apparently they’re pretty easy to make. I’m not sure how cold it gets at your latitude but with a greenhouse you could manage to lower your zone a level. Maybe enough for those carrots.

Worst case I guess is just grow winter crops during the summer. Half a year of cheaper food is better than nothing.

I like growing vegetables and flowers. It is the only think keeping me sane living in the city.

I know some do not, but the tariffs are happening, so best you can do is adapt, though honestly I would suggest it even if the tariffs were cancelled. It saves money, is good for the environment and your mental health.
