The trees were among 250 planted in mid-October by an army of young arborists, paid by Tree Trust for their efforts.
“We spent more than, I’m pretty sure, more than a week on that road,” explains Malick Jenke, among a half-dozen high school grads taking part in Tree Trust’s ‘Branches’ program.
The group of tree planters includes 25 high school students from St. Paul and the ‘Branches’ participants — most of whom are interested in pursuing a green career.
“One tree will take anywhere from a half hour to 45 minutes to get it completely planted, mulched and watered. In some cases, we have to stake those trees as well,” Zumach says.
She notes the value of the destroyed trees adds up to about $12,000, but the City of St. Paul says with labor and other expenses, the costs of the vandalism totals about $40,000.
A spokesperson says replanting the trees is a priority but noted planting season is pretty much at an end.
My money is on someone being upset they couldn’t pitchase and develop that land.
It’s either pure malice or stupidity it’s hard to say with so much of both going around
man, why? why are people so spiteful? why do acts such as these speak to them and motivate them?
I wish I knew. I do a lot of urban tree planting and this is surprisingly common. Unfortunately, I’ve never had the chance to ask people why they do it. I normally assume that one or two vandalized trees were not driven by ideology but maybe in this case it was, since they did so many.
I was looking at some trees I planted about 5 years ago yesterday and someone had completely stripped the bark off. Very sad. My typical assumption is it’s just an expression of impotent rage but who knows.
There’s no way this is just a random act of vandalism driven by entertainment. This is a determined act of malice.
Trees are the environment, and the environment is woke.
yeah. deep down i know this is all the motivation thee is. they hate us, and so they’ll hate anything we coalition with. the system has tortured them, and instead of looking to make the system stop, they look for someone to torture. torture is so normal in their life that they can’t imagine a world that works any different. it makes me feel sad
To quote Dr. Bob Kelso from the TV show Scrubs, “People are bastard coated bastards with a bastard filling.”
Because they know they won’t get caught or punished.
Their ground isn’t frozen, so tree planting season is upon them.
