There are a few left-exits (deathtraps) on the 17 in NJ that I’m sure are just after some merges. Drivers at a few points need to aggressively push to make that exit or their next opportunity will be a huge time cost. Many people make the risky choice to go for it.

If this is one of those, it’s hideous design and harried drivers. Slow down and watch for the hapless victims lest they make more hapless victims.
