A new law has come into force in Hungary which threatens to push thousands of Ukrainian refugees on to the streets or back to Ukraine.

The regulation restricts state support for Ukrainians to those who come from parts of Ukraine directly affected by the fighting caused by Russia’s invasion.

I have an easy way to rectify this:

    1. Suspend Hungary in their EU voting rights for limiting rule of law. Stop the payments for the same reason.
    2. Suspend Hungary in Schengen due to Hungary making it easier for Russians to come to the EU.
    3. Suspend Hungary in NATO as they obviously prefer alliance with Russia.

To suspend Hungary (your first point) legally requires unanimity of all EU countries aside from the one to be censured. (Article7)

Unfortunately Slovakia has recently elected a pro putin govt who will now block any attempt to deal with Orban.

There was a short window between the end of the Polish far right PiS being in power and Slovakia changing leadership when it could have been done. Unsurprisingly Orban was very compliant during that period and as soon as he regained an ally is back to his old tricks.

There is no legal way to do what you suggest

      Edit, missed a word

Nothing. You can only invoke article 7 against a specific country, and with 2 there’s insufficient votes to invoke article 7 against either. You can’t do a “twofer”.

You have to remember this was considered an unthinkable nuclear option when the treaties were draw up. That two countries could both diverge so far from the EUs ethos would horrify the (possibly naive) original founders.

Man, you’re making this sound like Hungary’s suspension would be a bad thing, but let’s break it down logically. First off, less EU red tape means more national sovereignty—Hungary can set its own rules without Brussels breathing down its neck. No more payments to the EU budget? That’s a direct economic benefit, keeping more money at home where it can be invested in local industries and infrastructure. And controlling their own borders without the Schengen chaos? That’s a win for national security and immigration management.

Skipping out on NATO? That just opens up new geopolitical opportunities. Hungary could negotiate more favorable terms with Russia or other non-EU countries, potentially lowering energy costs and diversifying its economic partnerships.

Then there’s the inflation argument—without being tied to the Eurozone’s one-size-fits-all monetary policy, Hungary could tailor its own economic responses to inflation, rather than being forced to follow policies that primarily benefit stronger economies like Germany’s.

You’re out here acting like you’ve got it all figured out, but it seems like your European expertise begins and ends with spotting a Nespresso machine in a Starbucks. And of course, you’re just another ‘I support the current thing’ bandwagon rider, regurgitating whatever’s trendy with zero critical capacity. Maybe stick to what you know, like figuring out how to froth that milk just right and leave the geopolitical analysis to those who can think past the latest hashtag.

Hungary is a net beneficiary of EU funds relative to what it pays. So it seems that your understanding of Europe is pretty bad all its own.

Oh and, if leaving the EU would be such a big benefit for Hungary, why haven’t they?

Would you prefer they stay in Russia and get drafted? Decreasing the flow of troops and arms into the region is good for the people who live there or ever want to return.

If that were the case, the EU would have broadly negotiated and agreed on the policy. Unilateral decisions that impact everyone is not how the EU works.

What do you mean if? Whether the EU negotiates an agreement, acts unilaterally, or sticks their heads in the sand has no impact on whether draft dodging hurts Russia’s ability to carry out the war.

More people of fighting age fleeing Russia and Ukraine makes it harder for their governments to send more to their deaths and puts further pressure for peace negotiations.

Or are your negotiations and bureaucracy more important than the Russian and Ukrainian lives Hungary saved by taking people out of the war?

There are already ways for anti-war russians to come to the EU, but not visa-free travel, which is simply stupid towards a country that has a history of sending assassins, poisoners, saboteurs and military posing as “tourists”.

This is not a problem for Orban of course, because he is putin’s buddy, but it is a problem for every other EU country that hosts refugees, defectors, weapons production, people they want to intimidate, etc.

Russia doesn’t need Hungary specifically, Russia needs someone in the Eu, to destroy from inside, and give internal info and passports.

If there would be a way to kick Hungary out, most of its current support would go to some other country, nowadays Slovakia has a Russian friendly government, between 2017 and 2021 Czechia had a definitely not Russia spy as prime minister and a lot of other countries has more or less successful far right parties with russian ties. There are a lot other options, not as convenient as the Hungarian messed up captured state, but still an acceptable replacement
